Egg Free Living

Do I need to eat eggs?

In short, no. Many people, from many different cultures and walks of life, live perfectly healthy lives without eating eggs.  The nutrients found in eggs, including protein, can also be found in a wide range of plant sources.  Plant foods also have the added health benefit of having far lower cholesterol content.

Egg-free eating

We want to help you make this a fun journey! Eating without eggs means you get to experiment with lots of new recipes and find exciting ways of preparing old favourites with new ingredients (no, you don't have to give up cakes!).

To give you a hand with egg-free cooking we have gathered together some particularly mouth-watering recipe pages. Also remember to check for egg-free meals and products when eating out and shopping. Especially check the ingredients of mayonnaise, cakes, biscuits, mousse, bread, pasta and patties. Remember the eggs found in most products and eateries are from caged hens.

If you have any further questions about egg-free living please contact Heather, our resident foodie.

A helpful list of egg substitues compiled by the Vegan Society. Note: the egg replacer widely available in Australia, at many supermarkets and healthfood stores, is Orgrans's No Egg. Egg replacers are plant-derived powders that have similar properties to eggs that you may be used to in baking and cooking . One small packet is equivalent to about 66 eggs. So for those of you that need a little extra convincing, the equivalent of a carton of eggs costs around 60 Australian cents - that's 5 cents per "egg".
