ABC News Canberra - 'Battery Ban'

TRANSCRIPT

Newsreader: The ACT Greens and the RSPCA have joined forces in a bid to convince the government to ban battery egg production in Canberra.  Greens MLA Deb Foskey pushed home the message outside the Assembly today.  [Shot of Dr Foskey in the Human Battery Cage]  She’s introduced a bill that would outlaw battery cages, forcing Parkwood Eggs in West Belconnen to change its production methods.  But the Chief Minister says he’s yet to be convinced it will make a real difference if the ACT goes alone on the issue.

Deb Foskey, Greens MLA: Interesting that the Chief Minister is happy for the ACT to go it alone on human rights, but in this case he’s denying the rights of animals.

Michael Linke, RSPCA Chief Executive (ACT): Of all the farm animals and all the production animals that Australia has, this is the cruellest practice, so I’m calling on the Chief Minister – make a stand, show leadership and ban battery cages.

Reporter: The Greens Bill is likely to be debated in August.
