F.A.Q.
Here are some of the common questions we've been hearing... Have you laid an egg yet?
- We are not actual chickens... Generally speaking, Humans do not lay eggs. As we are Humans who are only acting like chickens, it is unlikely that we will achieve this milestone no matter how hard we try. IF in the unlikely event we DO lay an egg, we will be sure to film it and distribute it to all media outlets so that you will hear that humans can now lay eggs. Please contact us if you have any suggestions as to how we can make human egg laying possible, because we're fresh out of ideas. How long will I have to stay in the Cage? How long is each turn?
- You are not expected to stay in the cages for any longer than you want to. Unlike the poor chickens who are inprisoned, you are there of your own free will. In our test run in Sydney, some people stayed caged for 15 minutes, others for 5 hours. It's up to you. Once you register as a volunteer and we finalise dates in your area you will be able to communicate to us when you are willing to sit in the cage, and how long for. Will the cages be in the sun?
- We promise we're not in the business of torturing people, so if it is getting too hot we will either re-locate into the shade or errect a cover to shelter you from those harmful rays. Vegan-friendly sunscreen will also be supplied for your protection. What happens when it rains?
- Normally when it rains, these little drops of water start falling from the sky. It's an amazing thing, but I understand with climate change and all, you may not have seen it happen before. Again, we are not here to torture you - if it rains, we'll move. If we can't move our display we'll pack up and go somewhere warm that serves something cold in frosty glasses (and the HBC team will dream about the days we could afford to buy beer!). Where exactly in [my city] will the cages be located?
- We're still in the process of finalising exact locations and welcome any suggestions you may have. Sign up to our volunteer register or mailing list and you will receive local specific information as we finalise tourdates. So far we have booked parks, squares, malls, university grounds and in front of art galleries and government buildings. If you think of somewhere we should be, please contact us and if possible provide lots of information (controlling authority, contact details, any booking forms, photos, map references, sketches of your suggested layout, etc). There is a shortage of Free Range Eggs already, If cages are banned, where will we get our protein from?
- It's true! Current demand for free range eggs far outstrips supply in most states. 13.1% of people in Canberra say they can't find free range eggs when they go looking and 33.5% of people think they are too expensive (probably due to short supply). Don't panic though!! You can still get plenty of protein from other sources. Check out our Protein Information Page to see how. Why do you need people to sign up? Can't we just turn up? - Yes, you can just turn up on the day, however, I know how forgetful I am and most of the time I need someone to remind me that something is on, especially if the date is months away. - Also for planning's sake we need to know roughly how many people to expect on any given day. As we draw closer to your town, we'll be asking for a more specific indication of when you think you can join us. If we don't know that we have enough people in an area on our list, we may change our mind and take the cages elsewhere, or use precious resources advertising in your area for volunteers that already exist that we just don't know about. It really helps a lot with our organization if we know who is coming. We promise that your details will not be sold to spammers and will only be accessable by the spunky organisers of this trip. The Cages aren't exactly right!
- So what? This is a piece of art. Its design is loosely based on cages that are roughly industry standard. If they were exactly right, then each person would only have 3/4 the size of an A4 sheet of paper to squeeze into and would have to crouch down to a height of about 40cm. These cages will do fine thanks!
